What
is the FSIS?
The FSIS is the Food
Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the U.S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA). The FSIS regulates and
inspects meat and poultry products to ensure that they are
safe, wholesome, and accurately labeled.
To achieve this goal, the FSIS routinely performs random sampling
of meat and poultry products through inspected plants and
retail outlets throughout the country. Begun on October 17,
1994, the random
sampling program involves approximately 1,700 meat processing
establishments under FSIS inspection and approximately 100,000
retail outlets that grind beef on a regular basis. |
